Food Fortification Day

Food fortification is the addition of one or more essential nutrients to food whether or not it is normally contained in the food, for the purpose of preventing a demonstrated deficiency  with one or more nutrients in the population or specific population groups.

Executive Order 382 mandates that every November 7 of each year will be observed as the Food Fortification Day.  Mandatory fortification of staples like rice with iron, flour with vitamin A and iron  and sugar and cooking oil with vitamin A as embodied in the Food Fortification Law of 2000 or RA 8976 also officially takes effect on the 7th of November, 2004.

As an update on the status of Food Fortification Program there are
already 139 processed foods with the rectangular Sangkap Pinoy Seal and 119  staple foods with the Diamond  Sangkap Pinoy Seal mostly flour with vitamin A and iron and  cooking oil with vitamin A.  This shows an  increasing availability of quality fortified foods which is expected to reduce micronutrient malnutrition, improved health and more productive populace for an improved quality of life for Filipinos.
