The Department of Urology took roots as a section of General Surgery in Dr. Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (formerly North General Hospital). Eventually its birth as a department was conceived by the act of congress of the Philippines in 1957. At the outset was a small group of urologist chaired by Dr. Angel I. Reyes and Dr. Horacio Banuelos as senior resident. Dr. Antonio Tiongson helped them as consultant. This was in response to the crying needs of our afflicted patients.
It was in 1972 that Dr. Virgilio del Castillo succeeded Dr. Tiongson as chairman of the department. Through the years, it has attracted residents of sterling character to carry on the ideals of service, training and research for which it was established. Two graduates namely Dr. Domingo Miranda and Dr. Danilo Mariano was appointed as consultants in 1978 and 1979, respectively.
Dr. Januario Estrada, a distinguished urologist, became the chairman of the department in 1989. He was succeeded by then the promising Dr. Eduardo Gatchalian in 1990. It was during this time that the department was accredited by the Philippine Board of Urology as a training institution. The following year, Dr. Nelson Patron joined the consultant staff. During this time, the department took a giant leap. Dr. Edgardo Reyes, the youngest consultant, was accepted in 1994.
The increasing demand for the growing urology patients paved the way for the construction of urology ward. Thus in September of 1996, finally the department moved to its new abode with greater number of beds.
On 1999, Dr. Nelson Patron took the helm as chairman of the department. Since then, the department has procured numerous urologic equipment and instruments keeping at par with the current trends. Dr. Juan Godofredo R. Bardelosa III, an alumnus, after undergoing Uro-Oncology training at Michigan, USA became part of the consultant staff on 2006. Dr. Ernesto C. Gerial Jr. joined the force of the consultant team on 2007 to share his knowledge and skills in urologic laparoscopy.
To this date, the department prides itself of having grown from a handful of urologist to its present graduates of 55. Many of who are renowned specialist in their own provinces, providing urologic care for our countrymen.
