Is leprosy curable?

Yes, leprosy is curable if detected early and treatment with MDT is given immediately.

Is it hereditary?

No, it is not hereditary.

Will I get leprosy if I sleep, eat and work with a leprosy patient?

No, A leprosy patient on treatment no longer transmit the disease so it is impossible for one to get leprosy. It is only the untreated multi bacillary patient which could transmit the disease.

A leprosy patient must lead a normal life just like you and I.

If transmission is airborne, then I am susceptible ?

Leprosy is the least infectious among communicable diseases.

Incubation period – 3-5 years on the average.

There is a need for a close contact with the untreated patient for you to be infected

Is there any vaccine? What about Prophylaxis?

There is no vaccine yet. Although studies made locally and globally showed that BCG vaccinated children of leprosy patients never developed leprosy
