On October 13, 2006, a tragic fire razed to the ground the 106 years old hospital building of the Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC). Before this incident, the building was fully renovated by the hospital management and was equipped with necessary modern medical equipment and apparatus. It had catered practically all the constituents of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur and its neighboring communities, but especially the majority abject poor who could hardly afford quality healthcare services in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities. In fact before it burned down, it is moving towards a tertiary level category hospital with the new annex building whose first floor was completed primarily through generated income from the hospital operations. The heart-rending scenario before it was gutted by fire was that the lobbies and halls all over the hospital building used to be jam-packed with patients who could no longer be accommodated in wards and private rooms due to limited space. The management then had to refer most of those patients to hospitals either in the locality or in Iligan City which is 38 kms. from Marawi City. Admittedly, for the grave or critical medical cases, such were referred to as far as Cagayan de Oro City which is about 125 kms. from Marawi City. |
